Tasmania is a wild and rugged place and hiking around the Cradle Mountain area certainly proves that. I was in search of something that would replicate a painted country scene iconic of Australia. The famous boat shed on Dove Lake was perfect for this. Id watched the weather report for two days hoping for either full sun or snow, being mid winter. Neither arrived. Instead I got cloud, lower cloud and even lower cloud again for days on end. It then dawned on me, that the low clouds were shrouding the mountains and creating their own sense of mystery, and a true depiction of the actual chilly wind and weather that would keep the light even and perfect for the scene. I’ll never learn. Trust nature.

PHOTO TIP

Sometimes we set out to just capture a nice picture. I like to teach my students to think deeper than that, and actually visualize what you want to capture. It can mean sitting down and “dreaming up” a great picture. When you have it etched in your mind, look for the elements that you can see in your plan that will make up the image. You’ll know when you have the formula right, because it will resonate with you. Pride will kick in. It’s easier than you think and quite often crucial to a killer image. Plan it, then shoot it.
