I set off into the wilderness with no expectations other than to explore the area, and photograph what I found. Some time into my hike, I saw this beautiful tree with its roots reaching over into the creek to soak up the taste. Trees like this and scenes like this are not uncommon in Coopers Creek, but the location in the creek shows both the movement and the stillness amongst the sheer wilderness. Perfect for a beautiful shot.

You know those times, when you stand and look around you and realise you are in paradise. This part of the Daintree Rainforest, is one of those places. I’d been a long term visitor to these respected places for many years and on a day of river hikes, I wanted to depict the silence and stillness of the rainforest, amid just the soft trickle of the stream across my ankles. I could take you to this exact spot, I know it so well. My senses let me recall it every time I see this image. Nestled a few kilometres upstream, there is a series of turns in the creek that give you a sense of being lost. It’s such a wonderful feeling.

PHOTO TIP

Sometimes you have to just stop and soak up the ambience, literally. Don’t be afraid to hike in fresh water streams, although my only caveat would be to check the weather reports upstream prior to setting out. If rain is due, don’t hike, as flash flooding can occur faster than you think. If all clear, take a spare pare of old shoes with good grip. the moss on the rocks in areas closer to the equate=or can be extremely mossy and slippery.

Leave as minimal footprint as possible in getting your shot. Look for a way to showcase not just what you see but what you hear and sense. The textures, the shapes and the movement. Slip on a polarizing filter to dial in some clarity and shine to your images in a rainforest. also set your white balance to cloudy. Avoid bright sunlight in your images where possible unless directly relevant, otherwise you’ll find white hot spots in your images, which can look very distracting.
