When I arrived on scene for this shot I wasn’t at all impressed. You know when some scenes just have nothing appealing at first glance? That is until you sit and absorb the area, and go exploring. I’d known of this area for years and wanted to visit, so I hiked all my gear in to find a minute trickle of water off the falls and rock graffiti everywhere. It was then that I realised, that was the shot. The cave sat behind the falls and I knew I’d need a very long exposure, and a few prayers, to hope the trickle of water would give me some sort of waterfall. A long exposure in mid afternoon sunlight would quickly over-expose though. I had to be patient to wait until late in the afternoon, and the light to drop to even attempt this one.

Some places are going to frustrate the hell out of you, when it comes to lighting. When you fight with a beautiful scene at the wrong time of day, the whole shot can be ruined. be honest with yourself, can you come back later? If not, then I understand you need to make do at the time. But if you can come back, do so, several times, if it’s an epic scene. I have been to places dozens of times and have always seen something different. The environmental aspects change every minute. Use that fact to your advantage and experiment with various angles and compositions as well as the lighting at different times of the day. Trust me, morning light is not evening light, and vice versa.
