Not what you would expect from Waimea Bay, but Im so glad I saw it this way. In December this beach has some of the most incredibly high waves known to surfing, but mid year, its dead flat as the ocean swell swings to the other side of the island. Because it’s so calm, the water becomes as clear as glass, and spinner dolphins play throughout. This image was immediately a panorama in my mind. I split the sky, water and sand into thirds and fired off four or five great shots. I’m in love with this image.

PHOTO TIP

The point of a great landscape photograph is to showcase a location in a different way. Before you travel somewhere, research the location thoroughly to find the most ideal standing point for your image. Use an app such as the Photographer Ephemeris to locate the rising and setting sun as well. That way you will increase your chances of capturing somewhere that has been shot to death, in a different way. Crystal shows an otherwise hectic and world renown surf swell as flat as a lake. Awesome.
