On tripod, Canon 5DMk2, 24mm, F11, 1/2 sec, ISO 100, no filter, processed in Lightroom.

I spent a fair bit of time on the northern shores of Oahu, particularly around Sunset beach and Pipeline. I’d heard that the locals go down to the beach each evening and watch the sunset and sing Hawaiian songs. What better way to immerse myself in the culture. I had to go. As the sun set, this palette of colours drifted across the sky. To me this image says nothing but Hawaiian sunset.

PHOTO TIP

When showing sunsets, try using a land formation to silhouette the background. This will give you a scene that almost looks like a painting or illustration rather than a photograph. Include some of the waves on a slow shutter speed to show movement, which adds a further painterly effect.
