Haere Mai means welcome in Maori. It is a greeting to welcome someone in, or to come to them. This old doorway in the back yard of an old store in Arrowtown stood out for me. The welcoming flowers and the old stone gave me sense of nostalgia, from the old gold panning days in the area.

Spend time find the sense of a place, the values of what a location stands for, or its origin. If you want to connect with the locals, ask around about what they love about their town or area. I always look for a way to photograph something that gives a statement or story in a single image. It’s not often easy to capture that in a single image, but with the right questions asked, you could be led into a great image.
