This is the day I fell in love with New Zealand all over again. After an overnight dump of snow across the ranges, the sun came out and it looked like a beautiful day across the region. A hour later it looked like this. A complete whiteout, leaving everything coated in at least 6 inches of powder. I was at Millbrook estate at the time, shooting for New Zealand Tourism, when this blew in. the whole area transformed into a literal winter wonderland. and this was only April! Snow was not due for another two months at least.

PHOTO TIP

Snow can be difficult to photograph. Because of all the white in your image, your cameras meter, the tool it uses to measure your exposure settings with, can be fooled into thinking everything is overexposed. The result is that your camera will try to darken your image, leaving your snow grey not fluffy white. How do you get round this? Force your settings to overexposure the image by one stop if the sun is out, and two stops if it is not. This will brighten you image back up to where it should be.
