A once grubby drug dealers hangout, the Ankeny Square, is now home to some much nicer ideas, such as some of Portland’s best cultural outings on weekends. As soon as I saw the archways of Skidmore fountain, I thought of a way to capture them as if they were still in use as the drinking trough for horses, which was it’s historical use. Its beautiful stone and cast iron structure, stands out strongly against the foliage around the Square.

PHOTO TIP

Try combining different textures in your images. It’s not always about light and shadow, but can also be about smooth and rough, or soft and hard surfaces. Combine these and you start to rigger a different emotion in your viewer. They can then relate to what they see, or even imagine the feeling of the texture in reality. That is when you have an engaged viewer. I’ve seen people actual touch my photographs, thinking the texture was part of the print.
