I know the northern beaches of Sydney really well and knew I wanted to photograph this iconic beach, nestled inside the harbour. Photographed across decades Balmoral Beach has been shot to death, so I knew I needed something different in a way, but also familiar to those who recognise the beach. I loved the “S” curve of the sand, having been swept by a beach tractor. While framing my shot, a dog came bounding through the archway in the distance, and I immediately thought my shot had been ruined. Then it dawned on me that exactly what I needed, but I didn’t have long as the dog’s owner would most likely be right behind him. I had time to fire off three images before the owner walked under the archway. Just enough time to catch a playful look at an iconic harbour beach on a gloomy day.

PHOTO TIP

Watch for opportunity. You may not always have time to sit, watch and contemplate your shot. I developed a habit a long time ago to find my ideal shot, set up, frame the composition, fire off one shot….. then go scouting. Once you look through the viewfinder you have a mental recollection of what the average frame width is, so you should be able to apply this to whatever else you go looking for. It takes tome to practice, but you’ll be surprised how easily you start finding shots in everything you see.
