Built in 1891, The Strand is one of the most iconic shopping malls in Sydney. It’s decorative, iconic interior is unmistakably colonial, drawn from an English influence. It is always a hive of activity and I wanted to capture a day in the life of the Strand, showcasing it’s very discerning shoppers and cafe lovers. Internally, it’s quite narrow, so avoiding people can be difficult with a large 28-300mm lens. It was all about timing on this occasion.

When roaming indoor landmarks such as this, two things to remember. One, you want to capture a candid viewpoint of the people going about their day. Two, avoid using flash. Whilst tempting, only use your flash under extreme circumstances. Firing a flash in the face of your candid audience will immediate turn attention to you and people will then become shy of being included in your image, losing the honesty of the shot.
