I decided when I went to Seattle that I had to see Mt Rainier close up. I was not disappointed. I have fought with myself over whether this should be a colour or black and white, and I truly love the cropped black and white so much more. Its a classic American landscape and so should be treated as one. All around me was cold frigid air and piles of snow, when i captured this image, but the late afternoon sun, seemed to dissolve the clouds so a full uninterrupted view of Rainier could stand in all it’s glory.

PHOTO TIP
Classical landscape images have to be captured with exactly that in mind. They have to stand the test of time, not just be a snapshot of a place. When it comes to mountain photography, I love using black and white, unless there is an epic sunrise or sunset to go with it. It’s the shape of the mountain you want to highlight, using the contrast of black and white technique as the tool.
