CAPTURE DETAILS

On tripod, Canon 5DMk2, 210mm, F18, 1/8 second, ISO 100, no filter, processed in Lightroom.

The colours of fall (autumn) throughout Washington are beyond description. I was on my way to the Olympic Peninsula when I saw this small lake in the distance and I wondered what reflections I would find considering there was a paint shop worth of colours in the trees and landscape directly behind the the lake. I walked into a clearing near the edge of the lake and found myself with an open jaw at the reflections. I deliberately found a shutter speed that allowed the colours to soak into the image, but fast enough to slow any real movement as the wind whipped across the surface.

PHOTO TIP

If you have the chance to shoot vibrant string colours without any filters, then do exactly that. Try to capture images as often as possible without the use of any filters, particularly polarizing filters. I could have used a polarizer on this, but it would have completely ruined my reflections across this lake. I also wanted to make sure the image reminded the viewer of a painting not just a photograph.
