The light thats bounces around this canyon is simply incredible. The shapes are fascinating. On this occasion I saw a little dugout in the wall about 2 feet high, just high enough to squat into. Of course, my curiosity got the better of me and I wanted to see what I’d find. Cramped into a semi-foetal position in 4 inches of sand and dust, I found a composition and then pleaded to the heavens that no tourists would kick my tripod leg as they all rushed past. Yes, it can be that busy in there. I was only 10 minutes in front of a bus load of  them, so I had to work fast. I love the way the dugout actually frames the image.

PHOTO TIP

When you want the shot to remember sometimes you need to go beyond your comfort zone… and feel the pain of a cramped position for just a few moments. I always trust my intuition, and if I get a feeling that a certain position will work for a shot and I have to get bent like a pretzel to do so, then I will. I’ve found myself in many an awkward position to get an extraordinary shot. You should not be afraid to do the same.
