This dune in the middle of nowhere, is one of the largest natural formations I’ve ever seen. It was 7am and 40°c (110°f). The wind was around 30 knots from my right and i was getting blasted with sand. The noise was incredible. It took me over an hour to get to the top of this thing to look across to a sheer knife blade edge. The morning sun was causing every grain of sand on the face to shine, causing havoc with my meter. I wanted a slow shutter to catch a a trail of sand in the distance, but in the end I had to force a decent shutter speed to counteract the wind on my tripod as well.

PHOTO TIP

Sand will kill your camera and lens, simple. You may not notice but one grain of sand in your focus ring can seize your focus. If you go into sand dunes, or on a beach during high wind, wrap your jacket or a scarf around the lens and camera body to prevent this. It may not look too funky, but it works. Dig your tripod legs into the sand as well to create a very sturdy platform to work off. If you are shooting video, be even more conscious of movement.
