Passing through the forests of Enumclaw, I saw this cleared patch of hillside, with misted cloud all around it. I reminded me of the aftermath of a smouldering bushfire from back in Australia. I pulled over and walked into the woods to catch a better view. I knew this was an image within an image, so I zoomed in as far as I could to frame this the right way. It looked incredible, and would have made a fantastic time lapse. What stood out for me were the clumps of trees, seemingly untouched, but I knew the truth. They were next.

PHOTO TIP

When I speak to my students, I always tell them to “capture the planet” in their own way. Tell the story of a scene. If you have an affinity with a particular cause, area or incident, photograph it. Documenting your life and what you discover is the new norm for creating memories for the ages. Make it impacting. Make it truthful. Make it what you want. It’s your image, it’s your depiction of your world. I say your world, because I see differently to you and you see differently to others. Our perspective can shape how we showcase something important, even if no-one sees it.
