I watched as this group of friends farewelled an old relative on the 415pm ferry. They stood there quite a while after this photograph, I guess hoping she would get home ok. I love the connection these people have with that ferry and their loving family member. I had to capture this with great timing. Firstly I wanted to make sure they didn’t turn around, as I wanted to leave them as unknown people. Secondly, the ferry was drifting pretty quickly, so position the ferry in the scene was also critical.

PHOTO TIP

When you have a real story in front of you, look at your composition and try to arrange the elements so that they compliment each other. Look for edges of each element so that they do not blend to become indiscernible from another. When we try to define our subject we “look for the white space” surrounding a subject. Sometimes also known as “separation.”What a like about this shot are several things in unison. The inference that the light is over the ferry. The wake from the ferry leads back to the people, connecting them to the scene. When you combine this to the ferry heading towards the harbour bridge, you connect the city to the story as well, but each are defined. each have separation and are easily found.
