CAPTURE DETAILS

Canon 5DMk2, 28mm, F20, 1/160th sec, ISO 100, no filter, processed in Lightroom.

Captured from the roof deck of the P&O Pacific Jewel cruise ship, I had long wanted to get as close to the Sydney Harbour Bridge from a decent height. This allowed for a near road level view of the bridge, but I only wanted a section of the architecture. As the sun aligned to sparkle through the structure, I waited for the right positioning and fired away several shots. Timing was the key, trying to catch the sun as it either slipped out from behind a steel post or retreated, causing the iconic star shape shine.

PHOTO TIP

Star bursts occur when you are shooting straight into the sun and can be very tricky to catch, but if you watch closely you can predict your shot. Using the edge of something to block the sun itself causes a star burst to radiate. Try picking an exposure setting that allows for even lighting, not too bright, otherwise you’ll lose the star. Test your settings until you find the optimal setting for the scene.
